This vegan chicken broth recipe is the perfect chicken broth substitute. It’s easy to make, made with whole foods, and has incredible flavor.

If you’re looking for a super hearty chicken flavor without the use of animal products, then this is the perfect substitute for you.

A lot of grocery stores don’t carry a vegan chicken seasoning which can be really frustrating when you’re trying to veganize some of your favorite dishes.

This DIY version has so much flavor you won’t miss the meat products in this.

It took me a long time to figure out a delicious chicken broth recipe that works with a vegan diet. 

I used to always use vegan bouillon powder or the gooey stuff you keep in the fridge.

But since then, I’ve been making this, and it has such a rich flavor and truly tastes like you’re using the real deal.

  • It freezes great, so you can always have vegan alternatives to chicken broth on hand and ready.

I know many people are on the bone broth train, but there are plenty of healthy things involved in the vegetables to make this broth.

Carrots: Carrots are a great source of beta-carotene, which can help boost your immune system, protect your eyesight, and even prevent cancer.

Can vegans use chicken broth?

This may be a bit confusing for some people, but because typically, chicken bones and chicken is used with a chicken base, it’s not vegan, and a vegan would not use it or want it in their food.

What do vegans use in place of chicken broth?

You can use various things like this vegan chicken broth recipe, vegan chicken broth powder, vegetable broth, and vegan bouillon cubes.

There are lots of recipes or store-bought versions. In my local stores, it’s a little harder to find a vegan chicken bouillon powder, and I’ve never seen a vegan ready-made version of broth.

For this vegan chicken stock recipe can I use powder instead of the fresh stuff?

I would use real onion versus onion powder, you can use garlic powder if you must but you get much more potent flavor with real minced garlic.

What’s the best vegetable broth to use for this recipe?

The only recipe I ever use for this one because it’s my favorite is Better Than Boullion Seasoned Vegetable Base.

Do I have to use vegetable broth as a base for this recipe?

Yes, because some of the delicious flavors come from the broth.

Can I make this oil-free?

You can leave out the oil and use water when cooking the vegetables, but I think it tastes better with a little bit of fat.

I don’t have a blender or hand blender; what can I use instead?

If you have a food processor, you can try using that in small batches depending on how big your processor is.

  • yellow onion, diced
  • fresh garlic, minced
  • carrots diced (4 baby carrots)
  • celery stalks, diced
  • vegetable broth
  • water
  • bay leaves
  • dried thyme
  • dried oregano
  • sea salt
  • ground black pepper

How do you make this homemade vegan chicken broth?

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Add in the onion, garlic, carrots, and celery and sauté for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add in the vegetable broth, water, bay leaves, thyme, oregano, salt, poultry seasoning, and pepper and stir to combine.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.

Remove the bay leaves and discard them.

Use an immersion blender or blender to blend the vegan chicken broth until smooth.

How much broth does this recipe make?

This recipe makes about 6 cups of broth.

How do you use this vegan chicken broth?

This is best used when you’re trying to turn regular recipes into vegan recipes when chicken broth is needed. You can sub this plant-based version in a 1:1 ratio for traditional chicken broth.

How do you store homemade vegan chicken broth?

This can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Can you freeze vegan chicken broth?

Yes, this freezes great. Just place whatever portion you want into a freezer-safe container and place it in the freezer for up to 6 months. 

Let it defrost, and then use it as needed.
